The true voice of enquiry.

End of the World.

In this era of the new millennium many believe we are heading for the end of the world. Flaming asteroids, massive volcanic eruptions and planet wide devastation are just part of the fearful scenario envisaged for this age. Yet even if one is not quite convinced by the scores of prophets who predicted these calamities. there is a very definite threat to this planet which is entirely of our own making. It is of course our continued abuse of the environment.

United Nations report

A report undertaken on behalf of the United Nations involving 200 scientists from scores of different countries warns that unless urgent action is taken today, the situation concerning the worlds environment will soon become irrecoverable. The report states that excessive use of fossil fuels will lead to a disastrous increase in global warming. In terms of harsh reality this means that by the year 2025 at least 66% of the worlds population will struggle to find an acceptable water supply. In addition there will be catastrophic flooding of low lying lands, leading to widespread homelessness, disease, and famine. Crop producing nations will see important agricultural land turned into vast dust bowls, and hazardous algae will lead to oxygen starvation of large stretches of shallow seas and oceans.

Critical Situation.

We are faced with a situation that is already critical. Many cities throughout the world are choked by dangerous levels of pollution, and irresponsible use of fertilisers means that seepage into rivers and lakes is slowly rendering them lifeless. Across the world whole species of animals and birds are threatened with extinction, and important coral reefs are struggling to survive.

No oxygen.

Perhaps the most worrying statistic of all is that up to 80 % of the worlds forests have so far been felled, evoking a truly nightmare scenario. These forests, often known as the lungs of the Earth are vital for the replenishment of oxygen. Without them we face a depleting source of breathable air, and eventually asphyxiation. Remember, that nature is a formidable adversary, and the facts are clear; if we continue to abuse our environment at the current rate we will not survive much longer. Fifty years would be a more than optimistic estimate, and there are a number of people who place that figure much much lower.

Massive Unrest.

As the world struggles to cope with these conditions there is bound to be massive unrest. Essentially we are faced with a complete disintegration of the world we know and have become accustomed to. Top of the list of priorities will be an adequate supply of safe drinking water. In the western world we take this very much for granted. Elsewhere it is a prime necessity. In the future this will become the most pressing problem that confronts us. The United Nations warns that future wars will result from water shortages and other environmental factors, that will impose a massive strain on nations everywhere.
