Is it too late?

How long can we survive on the planet or is it all over?

2000 - record year for disasters.

Last year broke records with the largest number of natural disasters ever recorded. The latest figures illustrate what a turbulent year 2000 really was.

The number of natural catastrophes around the globe were at least 25 % higher than the preceding year and appear to justify fears regarding climate changes and other damage to the environment.

Fewer Casualties.

The one cheerful note is that although 2000 brought record breaking disasters, human casualty figures remained surprisingly low. This was largely because many of the major disasters occurred in sparsely populated regions of the world.

The reasons.

While experts argue over the reasons for this upsurge it is clear that global warming and environmental damage alone cannot be held responsible. Recipients of our frequent press releases will recall that we always knew that 2000 would be an especially turbulent year. This was mainly because of the effects of a major planetary alignment together with a peak of solar activity known as Cycle 23.

Testing year.

The fact is that hard and fast conclusions about global warming will be difficult to determine until Cycle 23 has drawn to a close. Matters are further complicated by the arrival of yet another major planetary alignment in the summer of 2001. Only after these events are well and truly out of the way will it really be possible to evaluate the effects of global warming on the climate.

Disastrous changes - another damning report.

According to a new report issued on behalf of the United Nations the worlds climate is being modified “in profound and potentially disastrous ways.”

Chaotic weather.

This latest evidence already cements proof of chaotic weather patterns that many believe are a result of global warming. Although there may be other causes, the certain truth is that the year 2000 brought home the reality of just how erratic the worlds climate has now become.

Fluctuating conditions.

Across the world widely fluctuating conditions ranging from torrential rain and floods to devastating droughts typify a very real dilemma. These are disasters with lasting consequences and the immediate future looks extremely dismal. In South and Southeast Asia millions have been made homeless and vast acres of agricultural land have been lost to an ironic combination of floods and drought.

Sharp contrasts.

Sophisticated computer models based on the latest data indicate that even if current conditions become no worse, the future will bring sharp contrasts of hot and cold, with frequent periods of flood and drought.

East coast of USA threatened by massive tidal wave.

The East coast of the USA is threatened by a massive disaster of mind blowing proportions. Incredibly the danger comes from a crumbling volcano across the other side of the  Atlantic in the Canary Islands. Scientists from University College London believe that an unstable flank of the volcano is about to collapse. If this were to happen they estimate it would create an enormous tidal wave nearly 200 feet high - far bigger than any other recorded tidal wave in history.

Experts warn that the resulting tsunami would race across the Atlantic at the speed of jet airliner, where it would devastate the eastern coast of the USA just hours later.
